Building Department/Code Enforcement
The Chelmsford Building Department/Code Enforcement Division works to protect public safety through enforcement of the State Building, Electrical, Plumbing, Gas, and Sanitation Codes. Combined with local ordinances, response to public nuisance complaints and potential code violations, we remain committed to protecting and preserving public safety, quiet enjoyment of residential properties, evaluation of land development/use proposals per the goal and objectives of the Zoning Board.

- *Certified plot plans for additions, sheds or accessory structures [with a roof] must include calculations for FAR (Floor Area Ratio) and lot coverage.
- *Anyone requesting property information must request via email or FOIA to allow staff time to research. They may also visit the building department to review files in person. This information is not available through the permitting portal at this time.
A Maintain/Change of Use Business Inspection is required for new businesses. Fill out the Maintain/Change of Use application and return it to the Building Department with your payment of $100. Please plan accordingly to allow time to schedule inspection in a timely manner.
Any Home Occupation must adhere to zoning regulations and obtain a Business Certificate from the Town Clerk before approval.
