The Diversity, Racial Equity, and Inclusion Committee (DREIC) acknowledges the guilty verdicts returned in the Derek Chauvin trial. The death of George Floyd on March 25, 2020 caused widespread reaction around the world. It sparked candid conversations about race relations, systemic racism, and policing in America. The creation of our Committee was in part a reaction to this tragic event. The verdicts have significance because they show African-Americans receiving some measure of justice and law enforcement personnel being held accountable for their actions (two occurrences that don’t always happen).
The DREIC continues to encourage everyone to work for justice and equality as a critical components to achieving human rights. While we appreciate and value the various types of diversity represented by our residents, we recognize the importance of supporting our shared humanity.
